Gum (Periodontal) Therapy

Many Americans are diagnosed everyday with gum disease. The problem, however, is that many of those people don’t truly understand what gum disease is and how it begins.

Gum disease, known as periodontal disease, is infection that affects the tissues and bone that support the teeth. Though there are many causes of periodontal disease, the most common cause is from the bacteria that live in calculus (tarter). When calculus (tarter) builds up around the supporting tissues of the teeth, it actually causes the gums to begin pulling away from the teeth. The result is often tender, red or swollen gums and loose teeth.

Treatment involves removal of the deep calculus from under the gum tissue and may use medications in conjunction with treatment.

Here at Riverview Dental, we pride ourselves on the comfort we provide to our patients during the treatment of gum disease. We can offer soothing nitrous oxide and/or our relaxation method along with local anesthetic.
