Do's and Don'ts After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Published on April 18, 2022
By Riverview Dental

Wisdom teeth are the last group of molars found at the back of the mouth. Wisdom teeth usually develop from the ages of 16 to 25. Sometimes, they do not erupt at all. If a wisdom tooth has no space to grow, it can cause infection, pain, or other dental problems.

The chances are that you will have it extracted. After a surgical wisdom tooth removal procedure, there are some things you are supposed to observe. Here are some things you should or should not do after a wisdom teeth removal:

Do's

Bite on Gauze

After the procedure, the dentist will place gauze over the wound. It should stay in place for at least an hour. When an hour has elapsed, get rid of the gauze. If bleeding resumes, bite on another piece of gauze for another hour. Biting on the gauze allows the wound to clot and helps it to heal.

Elevate Your Head When Resting

You should relax after the procedure and avoid activity for up to 24 hours. Engaging in activity can increase blood pressure which can cause you to lose the clot. Have your head elevated on a pillow above the heart level when you rest. This can significantly reduce the swelling you experience.

Use Ice Packs

Use an ice pack on the side of your face where you have had the removal. It will minimize the swelling. The swelling does not happen immediately; instead, it will increase over time. The swelling will increase until the third day.

Eat Only Soft Foods

For the first 24 hours after the procedure, you should avoid hard and sticky foods. You should eat soft foods like yogurts, mashed potatoes, and milkshakes.

Cleaning

The dentist will advise you not to brush your teeth for 24 hours after the procedure. Instead, you can use warm saline water. Do not rinse your mouth too vigorously. Be gentle.

Don'ts

Spitting and Sucking

The doctor will advise you not to spit or use straws to suck anything. These two activities can remove the clot from its place. You can experience more pain, bleeding, and dry sockets if the clot dislodges.

Brushing

Do not brush your teeth at least for the first 24 hours. When you do, avoid the place where the tooth was. It will maintain the clot and continue the healing process.

Alcohol and Smoking

You are to avoid alcohol and carbonated or caffeinated drinks. Tobacco products are also not good for you because they slow the healing process. These products include all products with nicotine.

Sneezing and Coughing

It would be best to avoid sneezing or coughing since it can slow down healing. You should inform your dentist of any allergies. They will direct you on what to do.

Hot Beverages and Foods

It would be best to let your foods and drinks cool down before ingesting them. Heat can cause swelling and delay the healing process.
