How Flossing Can Help with Bad Gum Health

Published on February 25, 2021
By Riverview Dental

Most people will admit that they hate flossing. A visit to the dentist is never complete without the subject of flossing coming up. However, for most people, this seems like a lesson in futility. Everything they learn is ignored the moment they leave the dentist’s office. The truth is that regular flossing does help to protect oral health and preserve the appearance of your smile. When done right, flossing can help with gum health.

Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease causes damage to the gums and teeth. The disease can ruin the aesthetics of the smile, which can have a huge impact on an individual’s confidence or self-esteem. The disease also affects the lower part of the face and the bones that support the teeth. Weak bones will not just affect the tooth structure; they can affect a person’s facial structure. This means that your gum health will affect your overall health and appearance.

Flossing Removes Plaque

You may not think that you are accomplishing much by flossing, but you are. Flossing performs 40 percent of the work that is needed to remove plaque or sticky bacteria from the teeth. Plaque leads to the production of acid that can irritate the gums, lead to cavities and cause gum disease. Teeth have five surfaces, and when you fail to floss, you overlook two of the surfaces. These are the surfaces between the teeth.

The Right Dental Floss

There are different types of dental floss available. Choosing the right floss will make a difference when it comes to the effectiveness of the cleaning. Most types of floss are either made of Teflon or nylon. When choosing dental floss, you should think about the spaces between your teeth. If you have gum recession or large spaces, you should use dental tape that is flat and wide. If you have teeth that are close together, choose thin floss that will get between the teeth with ease.

Flossing Technique

Keep your teeth clean by using the right flossing technique. Take a piece of floss about 16 to18 inches long and sliding it into the space between the teeth. Move it up and down to polish the inner tooth surface. If you notice a little blood, do not worry too much about it. The buildup of plaque causes inflamed gums that cause bleeding. If, however, the bleeding continues after a few days, you need to visit a dentist. Bleeding can be due to periodontal disease.

Using a Floss Holder

If you find it difficult to use dental floss effectively, consider using a floss holder. You can find plaque removers that have a wooden or plastic floss holder. The holder allows you to use one hand to clean between the teeth. The idea behind flossing is to get to areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Using the most effective flossing product is important.

Many experts agree that simply brushing your teeth may not be adequate to fight against gum disease. Flossing, in addition to brushing, will help to reduce gum bleeding by about 40 percent more than only brushing. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits will help to prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease.
