How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last For?

Published on March 17, 2022
By Riverview Dental

Everyone loves a white and bright smile, but unfortunately, this does not always come naturally. Even those born with very white teeth experience dulling of the teeth color over time. Fortunately, there are ways to achieve the white and bright smile that has become very popular over the years.

Professional whitening and at-home whitening products can help brighten the smile. While the products are effective, the results do not last forever. Find out below how long whitening will last with all the whitening options available.

Causes of Tooth Discoloration

Tooth staining or discoloration may result from different factors. The discoloration can be extrinsic (external) or intrinsic (internal). The factors include the food and beverages consumed. Consuming black tea, coffee, and red wine can stain teeth.

Discoloration can be due to age, genetics, medical conditions, trauma, treatments like chemotherapy, and certain medications. Poor oral hygiene habits can lead to teeth staining due to the buildup of plaque and tartar.

Teeth Whitening Treatments

There are different ways to whiten the teeth. Some whitening treatments are more effective than others. Professional teeth whitening is more effective, and the results last much longer. It is necessary to use whitening products correctly to avoid overuse.

Professional in-office whitening options include:

  • Zoom

  • The KöR Dual-Activated formulation

  • Boost teeth whitening

  • Laser teeth whitening

There are LED teeth whitening kits that people can use at home. OTC whitening options include whitening toothpaste, whitening strips, and gels.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

The effects of teeth whitening treatment will differ depending on the procedure used. The type of whitening used will determine how long the results will last. Professional teeth whitening can last from six months to three years, depending on the treatment used.

Proper maintenance of the results will determine how long they last. Results of OTC teeth whitening can last from three to six months. In some cases, the results are evident shortly after using the products.

How Long It Takes to Whiten Teeth

The time it takes to whiten the teeth will depend on the whitening option or solution that you use. Professional whitening will usually take about one hour, revealing immediate results. OTC products usually take a few minutes to apply, but it takes longer to see results.

It can take several weeks to see the results while using the products consistently. LED whitening kits can produce results after one to four or five uses.

How Often You Should Whiten Your Teeth

When considering how often to whiten your teeth, you need to think about the treatment option you choose. If you choose professional whitening options, you will not need to whiten your teeth too often. This is because the whitening results last much longer than OTC products. Whitening toothpaste needs daily use, while gels and strips are used daily for a specific period.

Regardless of the whitening option you choose, the results will not last forever. At-home products can last a few months, but professional procedures can show results over three years. Talk to your dentist about the best option for you. The type of staining or discoloration you have will determine the best option.
