Root Canals: What to Expect and Why They’re Necessary for Saving Teeth

Published on June 16th, 2025
By Riverview Dental

When patients hear the words "root canal," they often imagine a painful and stressful procedure. However, thanks to modern dentistry, root canals are more comfortable, efficient, and essential than ever for preserving your natural teeth and protecting your oral health.

Why Are Root Canals Necessary?

A root canal becomes necessary when the pulp inside your tooth (the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected or inflamed. This often occurs due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, cracks, chips, or trauma.

Without treatment, the infection can spread, causing severe pain, abscesses, and even tooth loss. A root canal removes the damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the inner tooth, and then seals it to prevent further issues.

What to Expect During the Procedure

At Riverview Dental, we prioritize patient comfort and use the latest techniques to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience. If you need a root canal, understanding the steps involved can help ease any anxiety. Here’s what you can typically expect during the procedure.

We begin with diagnosis and imaging, conducting a thorough examination and taking digital X-rays to assess the extent of the damage and determine the best course of action. Once we confirm the need for a root canal, we administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring the procedure is pain-free.

Next, we move on to pulp removal. A small opening is made in the tooth to access and carefully remove the infected or inflamed pulp. This is followed by cleaning and disinfection, during which we thoroughly clean, shape, and disinfect the inside of the tooth to eliminate any remaining bacteria and reduce the risk of future infection.

After the tooth is properly cleaned, we proceed with filling and sealing. The empty root canals are filled with a biocompatible rubber-like material and sealed to protect the tooth from further damage. Finally, most teeth will require restoration with a crown. This step helps restore the tooth’s strength, function, and appearance, allowing you to chew comfortably and maintain your natural smile.

Benefits of a Root Canal

• Preserves your natural tooth

• Prevents the need for extraction

• Stops infection from spreading

• Relieves pain caused by inflammation

• Improves overall oral health

Root canals are highly successful and help restore normal chewing, appearance, and dental health.
