Signs and Symptoms That Your Dental Implants Need to Be Replaced

Published on April 30, 2020
By

Once you get your dental implants, you immediately get a lot of benefits. Such advantages are improved speech and appearance, comfort, and good oral health. When you have dental implants, you don’t have to be conscious about them or worried that they would pop out of your mouth. Even with the reported stability of dental implants, it is still vital to know if yours need replacements. Here are the signs and symptoms that indicate the need for new dental implants.

Loose Implant Crown

You’ll know that your implant crown is loose when you hear a clicking sound whenever you speak or eat. Dental experts say that your crown loosens when the bonding substance between the crown and the abutment weakens or fails. This calls for an immediate visit to your dentist so that the crown can be replaced.

Retroceding Gum

Research suggests that no matter how good you are at taking care of your dental implants, plaque will always accumulate along the base of your crowns. You can lessen plaque accumulation through regular dental visits, and regular brushing and flossing. Maintaining these practices can make your dental implants last a lot longer.

Firing Allergies

You may not know that you’re allergic to titanium alloy until you get your titanium alloy dental implants. If you’re allergic to this type of material, you will feel a tingling sensation and loss of taste. See your dental surgeon immediately, so that your present implant can be replaced with one that’s made of a different metal.

Infected Gums

It has been reported that discomfort, pain, and swelling are indications of gum infection. The pain you feel intensifies each time you speak or eat. For this, you should go to your dentist immediately to have the infection treated and have some parts of your implant replaced if needed.

You need to have frequent visits to your dentist for extensive cleaning. This will help maintain the health of your gums. Experts say that if you neglect your implants, the bacteria will continue to eat away your gum tissue and make their way to the jawbone. An abscess will then form at your implant’s base and ultimately decrease the density of your jawbone.

Cracked Crowns

Cracks in implant crowns may start as very fine fractures, usually caused by bruxism. This condition is the involuntary clenching or grinding of teeth. If you have bruxism, your crowns will have micro-fractures that will then turn into larger, more visible cracks.

If you have a malocclusion, the surface of your crowns will deteriorate a lot sooner. This usually calls for more frequent crown replacements.

Studies report that most dental implant crowns last for about 10 to 15 years. It’s only natural to expect some wear over time. You can incur cracks on your crown from a facial injury, or when you bite something hard.
