Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste for at least a couple of minutes each time. Since brushing cleans three out of five surfaces, you need to floss in between your teeth daily. This way, you get to remove the dental plaque that could build up quickly. Plaque is a sticky film of several strains of bacteria that regularly forms on your teeth. These bacteria produce acids that can damage your tooth enamel, resulting in cavities and gum disease. Mouthwash can also be an excellent addition to your dental care routine.
Equally important is seeing your dental health care provider regularly. Some people may only have to visit their dentist once or twice a year. However, others may have to go more than that. Those who have other health problems or at an increased risk for developing dental diseases will likely have to see their dentist every three months or so. The more vulnerable groups include smokers and pregnant women. Patients who have a weak immune system or suffer from diabetes and gum disease should also visit their dentist more frequently.
Avoid using tobacco products as they are linked to higher rates of a wide range of dental issues. These include tooth decay, gum disease, bone damage, tooth loss, and more. If you smoke, quit. Additionally, limit your alcohol consumption. Alcohol abuse can also take a toll on your oral health. Keep yourself hydrated as it can help avoid bad breath caused by inadequate moisture in your mouth. As you know, water is necessary to keep your salivary glands functioning well. By drinking water, your saliva can help prevent bacterial growth.
Eating nutrient-rich foods from all food groups is crucial for your optimum oral health. Foods rich in phosphorus like fish and lean meat, as well as calcium like low-fat or fat-free dairy products, promote strong teeth and bones. You can also protect your gum health by eating foods rich in Vitamin C, such as citrus fruits. Do you have a sweet tooth? Try keeping sugary foods and drinks to a minimum. You don't want more fuel for your mouth bacteria to grow and threaten your dental health. Probiotics like fermented foods and yogurt contain good bacteria. They can help provide a balance of mouth bacteria by keeping the bad ones away.
