What Can You Not Do After Getting Veneers?

Published on February 21, 2023
By Riverview Dental

Everyone desires a beautiful smile, but this is not always possible due to teeth imperfections. Fortunately, the problem can be solved using dental veneers. Veneers are thin porcelain layers covering the front of the tooth surface.

They can help conceal tooth imperfections, improving the smile. They are customized to match the patient's teeth size and shape, covering small gaps, discoloration, fractures, and misalignments.

Getting Porcelain Veneers

When you get veneers, ensure you choose the right dental clinic. The installation is a vital part of providing a good experience. A dental professional with the right expertise will ensure that the veneers are properly installed. The dentist will check your dental health and condition to ensure that the veneers are right for you. You will also receive information about the best type for your specific situation.

Do Not Overlook Oral Care

Daily brushing and flossing will prolong the life of your dental restorations. Regardless of how high-quality they are, veneers are susceptible to damage if you fail to care for them. They can become discolored if you fail to maintain good oral hygiene habits. Avoid foods and beverages that cause staining. Make sure you use a good toothbrush to eliminate all plaque, especially after consuming sugary foods or beverages.

Avoid High Intake of Sweets

When you get veneers, be careful about what you consume. Foods and drinks with a high amount of sugar can lead to the accumulation of dental plaque. It is a root cause of dental issues such as cavities and tooth decay.

Sweets are bad for the teeth and affect veneers, reducing their lifespan. Failing to brush your teeth immediately after eating sweets produces acid that can affect porcelain veneers.

Regular Dental Checkup

Failing to schedule regular dental checkups can affect your oral health. Knowing that veneers do not protect the teeth from damage and dental issues is vital. When you get veneers, visit the dentist regularly for cleaning and checkup.

It allows the dentist to look for any signs of damage. Professional dental cleaning completely removes traces of plaque and tartar. Cleaning helps protect your teeth from harmful bacteria that cause damage.

Avoid Using Teeth As Tools

Using your teeth to open cans or bottles will damage your veneers. Avoid biting hard things as this can cause the veneers to chip or slip from their original position. You should also avoid chewing ice and other hard foods and biting fingernails. If you grind your teeth, consult your dentist about a custom mouth guard. The grinding action can erode the surface of the veneers, causing damage and reducing their lifespan.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is harmful to your overall health, and this includes your dental health. If you have dental restorations or veneers, avoid smoking. The habit may not stain porcelain veneers, but it can still damage the bond that holds them.

Smoking can lead to the formation of a "blue circle" that will affect the appearance of your smile. Taking care of your veneers will help prolong their life. They can last years if you take good care of them.
