Who Should Be Screened for Oral Cancer and How Often

Published on March 20, 2026
By Riverview Dental

Oral cancer screening is an important part of preventive dental care because early changes in the mouth are often easier to treat when they are found sooner. The American Dental Association supports routine visual and tactile examinations for all patients, and Riverview Dental offers oral cancer screenings as part of its care in Corunna.

Adults Should Be Screened Regularly

Most adults should have an oral cancer screening as part of regular dental visits, even if they do not notice symptoms. A screening is a quick exam of the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, throat, and surrounding tissues to look for unusual sores, red or white patches, lumps, or other changes. Current ADA guidance emphasizes a comprehensive extraoral and intraoral clinical exam for all adults.

Some Patients Need Closer Monitoring

Some people may need oral cancer screenings more often because their risk is higher. Risk factors commonly linked to oral cancer include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, HPV-related disease, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, and a history of suspicious oral lesions or oral cancer. Age can also increase risk over time, which is why screenings become even more important as adults get older.

Signs That Should Not Be Ignored

You should schedule an evaluation promptly if you notice changes in your mouth that do not heal or go away. Common warning signs include:

  • A sore that does not heal
  • A lump or thickened area
  • Red or white patches
  • Ongoing mouth pain
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Numbness in the tongue or lips
  • A persistent sore throat or hoarseness

These symptoms do not always mean cancer is present, but they should be checked without delay.

How Often Should You Be Screened

For many adults, oral cancer screening can be done during routine dental checkups. Screening frequency may increase when a patient has higher-risk habits, a concerning health history, or an area in the mouth that needs to be monitored over time. In other words, there is no one-size-fits-all schedule - the right interval depends on your age, health history, and risk profile.

What We Look For During Your Visit

When we perform an oral cancer screening, we examine both the visible tissues in your mouth and the surrounding areas of the head and neck. We are looking for anything unusual that may need a closer watch or further testing. Because these exams are fast and noninvasive, they are an easy addition to preventive dental care and an important way to support long-term oral health. Riverview Dental provides these screenings at its office in Corunna, Michigan.
